For all those who are wondering what an Aussie is........ here is a little bit of information about this fascinating breed.
"What in the world is an Aussie?" Australian Shepherds, affectionately known as "Aussies", are not Australian at all, but rather American in origin. They were developed to herd livestock and work as all-purpose farm and ranch dogs. Very quickly, they were recognized as a breed capable of so many other roles because of their high intelligence and eagerness to please. One role that fits them so well is the honored position of beloved family companion.
Aussies are people dogs that thrive on human companionship. They have an intense need to be near their owners. Indoors, they will follow you from room to room and will stay close to your heels when outdoors. Because of this trait, Aussies are happiest when kept in the house as a member of your family.
Properly socialized and trained, Aussies are ideal family dogs. They are gentle guardians of small children and enthusiastic playmates of older children and adults. Don't be surprised to see your Aussie diligently working to keep you all in a neat little group ... like a flock of sheep! After all, Aussies are Shepherds, bred to herd! Aussies are typically reserved with strangers and can be protective of their family and property. Training classes and exposure to a wide variety of people and places will help the Aussie develop appropriate social behaviors.
Aussies need daily exercise to keep them healthy and happy. They need to run, play with another dog or with people, catch a ball, or any energetic activity in a safe, secure area. If an Aussie doesn't get this daily activity, they may become barkers or behave destructively out of frustration. This negative behavior is easily prevented by spending time and playing with your Aussie every day.
Aussies are a double-coated breed so they will shed the undercoat once or twice a year. Weekly brushing will eliminate mats and tangles and remove dander and dust. During shedding, a slicker brush will help remove the loose undercoat. Weekly nail trimming and teeth cleaning should also be part of the grooming routine.
Aussies come in several different colors - examples are Black Tri, Blue Merle, Red, Red Merle. The color variations are striking. For more detail on color types, please use the Breed Standard link below. Aussies also have docked tails or naturally bobbed tails. It will be noted on your dog's papers whether the tail was docked or natural bob. Color and tail characteristics play very important roles in genetics and breeding programs. A responsible breeder has spent a great deal of time becoming knowledgeable in the many aspects of genetics and good breeding practices pertaining to the Australian Shepherd. So, you can rest easy while you pick the color and sweet face of the puppy that will become your companion for many years to come.
